Gogabil is Bihar’s 15th Protected Area and also state’s first Community Reserve. The State Board for Wildlife, under the provision of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, amended in 2002, incorporated Gogabil as Community Reserve and Community Reserve on 2 August, 2019. Gogabil, Bagharbeel and Baldia chaur are important wetlands enlisted in the Important Bird Areas (IBA) of Asia.

Gogabil Bird Sanctuary, Manihari

It is a prototype of oxbow lake of about 1 to 5 km dimension with ample water content round the year. The water body and land area of Gogabil encompass 217 acres area of which 73.78 acres belong to the government while the rest is owned by the local community of Amdabad and Manihari blocks of Katihar district. The area is heavily flooded during monsoons every year with rains and spill over from Kankhar, Mahananda and Ganga rivers. Bhimband is situated in the south-west of Munger district in Bihar. The sanctuary is spread across an area of 682 sq km and comprises of undulating topography. Here, you can find a unique amalgamation of hills, plains and plateau region blanketed by a thick forest cover and some incredible hot springs. The forests here are famous for hot water springs which are said to contain traces of radio active. The hot springs here seem to have a constant temperature throughout the year and attract a lot of tourists. Of significance is the historical legend behind this wildlife sanctuary.

Jaimangalagarh (जयमंगला गढ़) is a major tourist destination and bird sanctuary of Bihar. It is surrounded by Kabar Lake , where every year lakhs of birds come from all over the country and abroad. There is a famous temple of Mata Jayamangala here. Also known as Monkey Island as there are many monkeys found on this island.

History

It is believed that this was the stronghold of King Jaimangal. At present, research on its historicity is going on. The site, is clearly quite ancient since even without proper excavations, it has yielded artefacts dating back to the 5th century B.C.

Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is located in Bhagalpur District of Bihar, India. The sanctuary is a 50 km stretch of the Ganges River from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon. Designated in 1991, it is the only protected area for the endangered Gangetic dolphins in Asia. Once found in abundance, only a few hundred remain, of which half are found here.

The Gangetic dolphins have been declared as the National Aquatic Animal of India. This decision was taken in the first meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) chaired by Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh on Monday, 5 October 2009.

The Bihar government took the decision in the wake of the killings of four of the Dolphin to appoint 20 dolphin ‘mitras’ in villages between Sultanganj and Kahalgaon to create awareness to save dolphins in the sanctuary.

It is the smallest sanctuary in the state and also a place to look for migratory birds.

Nagi Bird Sanctuary is located in Jhajha Jamui district of south Bihar, near the Jharkhand border. It was declared a bird sanctuary on 25 February 1984 as per Section 18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The final notification under Section 26A of the act was issued on 4 September 2009. Thousands of migrating birds congregate in the reservoir during the winter season, especially from November to February. The area of the sanctuary is 2.1 square kilometres. It is home to over 133 bird species. There are also a variety of dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies which are yet to be studied and documented. In 2004, Nagi Dam Bird Sanctuary was declared an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. The area overlapping with the IBA is 791 ha.

Udhwa Bird Sanctuary, spreading in 5.65 square kilometers is the only bird sanctuary of Jharkhand state. Kabar Lake or Kabar Taal or Kanwar Taal Bird Sanctuary at Begusarai is a " dream spot".  It is Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake.
