Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) is located in the heart of Bhagalpur. It is 25ft high Clock Tower made in British Time. Around it there is market place of the old city.
The historic Ghanta Ghar Clock Tower was built during the British Rule in dedication to the King Edward VII of Britain. Situated in the heart of Bhagalpur, it is like the centre of the city and all of Bhagalpur is easily accessible from this site. It is situated in the centre of a chowk, often referred to as Clock Tower Chowk because of the monument, which is one of the busiest roads in the city.
The city of Bhagalpur itself has major historical and mythological significance. The name Bhagalpur is derived from Bhagdatpuram which means the city of good luck. The city is world renowned for its silk work and is often called The Silk City. Bhagalpur has also been mentioned in great mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana as the Kingdom of Anga, which was ruled by the charitable king and fierce warrior, Karna. According to ancient Hindu Texts, this city was the place where gods and demons churned the ocean to procure elixir during Samunda Manthan. Ghanta Ghar Clock Tower has been an important landmark in Bhagalpur and is surrounded by many markets and shops to attract tourists. There are several shops surrounding the clock tower offering fruits, flowers, clothes, shoes, snacks and drinks and much more at reasonable prices. There is also a Nursery near the tower. The tower is also close to the famous Hanuman Mandir of Bhagalpur. Renovation work was done on the Tower recently and a fountain was added to the monument to make it more appealing to the tourists. The clock located on the head of the tower works even after a century of its construction.
The Ghanta Ghar Clock Tower is the soul of Bhagalpur and the government and non-government organisations like Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) are working towards its preservation. Visitors ideally spend an hour visiting this magnificent clock tower and indulging in various activities surrounding it. The Ghanta Ghar Clock Tower has 24 hours open timing on all seven days of the week. There are no visiting charges to the tower. The best time to visit the tower is in the early or late evening to avoid much traffic and enjoy the view of this beautiful tower in the sunset.
