अकबरी मस्जिद, राजमहल (Akbari Masjid) – Rajmahal

Quite close to the Sanghi Dalan is the Akbari Mosque, built in 1556, it is one of the oldest mosque of India built during Akbar period. It is believed that first namaz was offered here by Great Mughal Emperor Akbar himself. It is a well maintained mosque where many muslims come to offer namaz.

This mosque is completely made up of Bricks by using lime and surkhi. This huge mosque is a representation of Mughal era architecture and the impact of the Indian blend in Mughal art. Windows are said to have been added later to the mosque’s Mihrabs, to create a British dispensary inside the mosque. The dispensary operated till 1912, after which the mosque was restored to its original architectural shape.

The road from Rajmahal through Bhagalpur and Sahibgunj, runs westward from the Akbari mosque and offers many interesting places worth seeing.

The Jami Mosque (Lat. 250 04‘ 29’’ N., Long. - 870 46’ 46’’ E.) is located at Mangalhat, 7 km from Rajmahal and about 32 km from the district headquarter Sahibganj and about 480 km from Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. Jami Mosque was built in the last quarter of the 16th century AD by Raja Mansingh, the Governor of Emperor Akbar.

शिवगंगा तालाब, देवघर (Shivganga Pond) – Deoghar

Shivaganga, earlier known as Varvoghar kund, was founded by Ravana, when he made a blow with his fist on the earth. 2 kms from Deoghar, there are temples of Radha And Krishna here.This Balanand Brahamchari Ashram is a fine architectural monument for religious purposes. The construction was completed in the year 1940 under the patronage and watchful supervision of Rani Charushila Ghosh of the Pathuria Ghat Royal Family, Kolkata.

It is situated 1.5 k.m. away from Baba Baidyanath Temple. It is a nice visiting spot. This temple looks like the temple of Ramakrishna in Belur. Inside it there are idols of Radha – Krishna. Its height is 146 feet. The amount spent in construction of the temple was about Rupees Nine lakhs (9 lakhs). This amount was donated entirely by Queen Charushila Devi. At the early age she lost her husband Akshay Ghosh and son Jatindra Ghosh. Grieved by the deaths, she left her home and constructed the temple on the advice of Balananda Brahmachari, a saint whose idol is also enshrined in the temple.

अजगैबीनाथ मंदिर, सुलतानगंज (Ajgaivinath Temple) – Sultanganj

The origin of Ajgaivinath temple at Jahangira or Sultanganj is not exactly known. Some claim it to be a Swayambhu, on the rock, discovered and then given an abode. That this is a very ancient place of worship there can be no doubt. The temple is solidly built on the rock and has got a series of marvelous rock sculpture and some inscriptions. Some of the specimens of the rock panel sculpture at this temple can hold their own against any of the best known specimens anywhere in India.

Ajgaibinath Temple is a famous Lord Shiva temple situated in the streams of river Ganges. This is a holy place where Jahnu Sage lived and the river Ganges flows northward (Uttarvaahini Ganges) and it is considered to be very auspicious due to this reason.

This is another site at Sultanganj. A mosque called Jami Masjid, is situated at the top of the hill, with the platform supported by a retaining wall facing the river.

From its conspicuous position amidst Hindu ruins, it is supposed to represent the site of another ancient Hindu Temple or Buddhist Stupa, not clearly described by Cunningham, who assigned it to around 1500 AD from its Pathan style of architecture. 

Bloch, who referred to the mosque with “the curved Bengali battlement, the only instance of this style which I know of outside Bengal proper”, mentioned that underneath that mosque was once the site of “a large Buddhist stupa”, but, however, no grounds of such conclusion were documented. 

Remnants of tunnel and caves can be seen on both Ajgaivinath and the Murli Pahar hill where saints used to meditate . Stone statues and idols of Hindu and Jain gods are frequently seen on both the hills.

The tomb of Pir Shahjangi, recorded in authentic books like Francis Buchanan's Gazetteer and M Francis' Eastern India, is a valuable heritage not only for Bhagalpur but also for the people of East Bihar.

Shahjangi, a Sufi saint preacher, was a Risaldar in Afghanistan in the 13th century. Later he was initiated into the Sufi Silsila and established his Khanqah in Bhagalpur. The tomb has been built by bringing stones from the Kaaba.

The Idgah, the tomb of Pir Shahjangi, the pond, the field of Karbala, all this is spread over one hundred bighas. The mosque with 11 domes is nowhere else in India.

Bhagalpur also has the grand tomb of Ibrahim Hussain Khan in Khanjarpur which is one of the best monuments in North Bihar. Located at Khanjarpur, The tomb is renowned all over the country for its historical importance and architecture.

The List of Ancient Monuments in Bengal (1896), pp. 422-23, describes the Mausoleum as “a very pretty monument, in good condition” which was “repaired in 1845 by the Magistrate of Bhagalpur.” 

The tomb is rectangular in plan with a central pointed dome surrounded by four domed kiosks or ‘chhatris’. There are decorative finials on the roof at each of the four corners and a monumental gateway to the south. गुरुद्वारा बड़ी संगत, भागलपुर (Gurudwara Bari Sangat – Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Chowki) – Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur had two Sikh Sangats when Guru Tegh Bahadur visited it in 1667. Guru Tegh Bahadur is said to have stayed at Bari Sangat on Burhanath Ghat of which what is left is a stone slab, still considered holy. Over it Sardar Inder Singh Atwal got a room built in 1974. On every amavas, Guru Granth Sahib is brought from Gurudwara Singh Sabha in the interior of the town and a congregation is held here with the holy book placed on the old slab called Chauki sahib. The place itself is named Gurdwara Bari Sangat Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Chowki Sahib. An old hand-written copy of Guru of Guru Granth Sahib acquired from the former Udasi priest of the shrine is preserved in Gurdwara Singh Sabha. The other place, Chhoti Sangat, also on the Ghat a little distance away from Bari Sangat has since been converted into a Hindu temple.
